Joymakers Celebrates International Success with Grand Prix Win and Festival Selections

We are thrilled to share that Joymakers continues to captivate audiences and gain recognition across the international film festival circuit. The next milestone in its journey will be its premiere in Bosnia and Herzegovina at the Prvi Kadar Film Festival, starting November 25, 2024.

We are also honored to announce that Joymakers was recently named an Official Selection in the Human Spirit Documentary category at the Documentaries Without Borders International Film Festival, with results to be announced on December 14th. Adding to this success, in November 2024, Joymakers was named a Winner at the Miami Women Film Festival 2024.

The journey of Joymakers has been truly remarkable. We are proud to have won the Grand Prix at the 8th Annual FROM (International Festival of Short Films with a Roma Theme) and to have been officially accepted into the prestigious Berlin Women's Cinema Festival. On October 19th, Joymakers made its U.S. premiere at the renowned United Nations Association Film Festival (UNAFF) at Stanford, further cementing its global impact.

These honors highlight the film’s compelling narrative, celebrating universal themes of hope, resilience, and the transformative power of music.

The Jury's Statement: At the 8th FROM, the jury—comprising Dragomir Zupanc (President), Vladimir Dordevic, and Dr. Vladimir Paunovic—awarded the Grand Prix to "Joymakers." They commended the film for its subtle directorial approach, which effectively conveys the emotions, dedication, and passion of the Roma music community in southern Serbia. The film beautifully transports viewers into a world where music ensures the community's future while honoring the legacy of artist Maksut Maksutovic. Through refined photography, thoughtful montage, and a deep personal connection to southern Serbia, "Joymakers" portrays a world where solidarity and art offer a hopeful promise for the future.

Festival Circuit Success: Joymakers also had a spectacular premiere at Beldocs, the 17th Edition International Documentary Film Festival in Belgrade, Serbia, with two sold-out shows that captivated both audiences and critics. The film's compelling storytelling and moving portrayal of Romi musicians have deeply resonated with viewers, marking a significant milestone in its journey.

Stay tuned for more updates as Joymakers continues its inspiring journey on the festival circuit. We invite you to join us in celebrating and sharing this powerful story with the world.

Joymakers explores the world of South Serbian Roma trumpeters. It reveals their musical prowess and the health risks. Amidst joyous performances lies a deeper struggle for survival. At the heart of the story is teacher Maksut Maksutović Maksut, whose legacy is carried forward by Milan  donja Nikolić. Their friendship with U.S. educator Nada Miljković inspires a quest to establish a music school, dedicated to nurturing young talent and preserving their rich musical heritage.
